Low Level Hum of Crazy
Jess, who also has a mattress in her living room, has mastered the art of disregarding it. That’s where I’d like to be, but the mattress is creating a low-level hum of crazy for me, on account of the OCD. I imagine that Steve harbors this same low-level hum of crazy for the giant photo leaning against the couch, which also creates a level of guilt for me on top of the crazy, so it's really fun being me right now.
When I look at the living room, instead of seeing this:

Unfortunately, I see this:
And so while I did my morning workout, I distracted myself from the pain, suffering and wheezing by mentally conjuring up ways to rearrange the apartment so that I can achieve Jess’s way of rising above it. I'm very excited for Saturday, because that's when Project Zen Design will officially be underway.

I don't know if I already sent you this recommendation, but do check out www.apartmenttherapy.com. It is full of photos, resources, and house tours (apartments) of people who have achieved the serenity and the zen you seek. I am in the midst of redoing my Brooklyn 500 s.f. 1 BR apartment right now, and this site (and the book Apartment Therapy) was the inspiration. I have learned so much and am having such a good time with it. For people who like to have plans and lists (sound like anyone you know?), the book has a step-by-step 8-wk apartment cure. I tell ya, my place is going to be a masterpiece of zen when I am finished!
Those pictures are truly hilarious. Seriously. Also, the mattress is technically in the bedroom, so maybe that's what helps me ignore it? Because it's slightly less incongruous?
I really like the 'calm' photo you picked - not least the Arne Jakobsen chair:-) Unfortunately, my space resembles the 'messy' photo more (I have a mattress in the living room as well, lol).
Still, there are corners with serenity, straight lines, and uncovered surfaces in my place, and I do believe we'll (all) get there. Eventually.
b - thanks for the link (www.apartmenttherapy.com), truely inspirational!
once you start the work, the image will stay in your head... good luck and keep it clean and simple!
