Two Out of Four Ain't Bad
Yesterday was a (partial) success. I managed to shower and make myself up. I also cleaned up most of the apartment, stopping short of the living room. I sound like I’m recovering from a serious illness -- and I am, if you can call laziness an illness. I do have to give myself some credit, seeing as work has been rather exhausting, so one weekend of patting myself on the back for showering is allowed, I suppose.
But anyway, the partial apartment clean-up is where any hint of virtuousness came to a screeching halt yesterday. I did not work out, nor do I think I really even intended to, if I’m completely honest about it. I also didn’t do a lick of Christmas shopping, although now I know exactly what to get for everybody. For dinner last night, Steve and I went out to a hibachi restaurant. On the way home, we laughed at how I’d deluded myself into thinking that hibachi is healthy, the way they serve up that giant pile of fried rice … and with the sheer abundance of food placed in front of you, it’s almost impossible to eat a reasonable portion size.
Today we’re feeling a tad sobered on the fitness front. We’re not where we want to be, and we need to whip ourselves into some shape. This is an especially important goal, since Steve and I are registered to run a 10-mile race this spring and there’s no way I want to go into tackling 10 miles feeling unprepared in any way. So today I’m charging my MP3 player and I’m going to see how well I do at jogging five miles.*
I also need to figure out when I’m going to finish cleaning the apartment. And I need to plan and shop for some healthy meals for this week, and I gotta get my ass to the mall. So today is another day of trying to get my act together, although I can tell that I’m feeling a bit more motivated today, seeing as I’m getting started a whole hour earlier than yesterday.
Baby steps.
*Okay, maybe 2 miles.

Are you a runner?
5 miles is a lot to start with this early in your training program. Why not go for 3, and then shoot for 5 in 2 weeks? I highly recommend using the Runner's world training modules. They are specially created for you on the website, and are totally free!
I ran the Army 10-miler in October. It was triumphant for me, because it was 2 years to the day after I broke my ankle and had to have it reconstructed. I started training in March, but I hate running the way a kid hates liver and onions. But I ran all spring, and all summer. I prepared by running a 5K, then an 8K about 4 and 2 months before the race. You might want to also try doing something like that...
10-milers are hard work, but I don't regret doing it for the world. I'm not happy with my time, and will someday run a 10-miler again (I think) but the fact that many people never finish at all, and I managed to get my chubby rear across the finish line was just fine with me.
Good luck!
